Overview of our book Fortune’s Impasse:
Dan Fortune gave up his personal dreams and aspirations on the sudden death of his father to salvage a rundown community food market, and to provide for his mother. Through hard work, skill and good luck, Dan grew that local market into a major chain of markets and a vertically integrated food business.
Despite this apparent success, Dan felt that things were out of control. Life was complex, too complex. His wife Marnie felt that their family was falling apart and internal strife between his two eldest children, who were both vying to run the business, threatened to undo everything that he and Marnie had worked so hard to build.
For those who are involved in a family business or a business family in any capacity, Fortune’s Impasse will provide inspiration, hope and guidance on how to achieve clarity, control and a good outcome for everyone involved.
The family is one of nature’s masterpieces.

Foreword
Toward the end of the 1920s in Europe, having experienced many of life’s most heart-rending trials, my grandpa, Andy, summoned the courage to immigrate in search of a new life for his young wife, Lena, and his ailing two-year-old son, Joe—my father. Andy became a successful entrepreneur, and he raised a wonderful family, now thriving in its fifth generation. I have long been inspired by Andy’s courage and dedication to future generations, and I have inherited his passion for our family business.
There is nothing more compelling in life than trying to understand the dynamics of family relationships, both in the families we are born into and the families we create. As parents, we are often overwhelmed by the challenges of providing love, nurturing and financial security to our children. These needs change rapidly through the cycles of a family’s life. Fortunately, fact-based study and analysis of successful families over the last few decades now shines a light on the ways and best practices that can help us learn and grow—as individuals and as a family.
Most of our fulfillment in life comes from the success of our relationships within our families. My grandpa referred to these as the simple things in life that bring us the greatest joy. Truth be told, there is nothing simple about managing a family’s human, intellectual and financial capital from generation to generation.
The message inside Fortune’s Impasse is for all those who have sought or still seek the courage and inspiration to make their family life—and all relationships in the family—the very best they can be, for generations to come.
